Stan O'Neal '74: The path that began at a small cotton farm in the deep south of America and ended in the executive suite of Wall Street's leading stockbroker is not one much trodden. It is, however, the one taken by Merrill Lynch's president and chief executive Stan O'Neal. After leading the firm to record earnings, O'Neal, the first African-American to head a major Wall Street brokerage, has been rewarded with a 30% rise to $48m (¡ê24.4m, E37m) in his earnings for last year. O'Neal received $700,000 in salary plus a cash bonus of $18.5m and stock valued at $28.8m for 2006. The year before he earned $37m in salary and bonuses. Many on Wall Street regard the disclosure, in a regulatory filing, as a fitting tribute to somebody whose rise from poverty to undreamt wealth is truly remarkable
