The National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA) is pleased to announce the selection of INVESTING NOW at the University of Pittsburgh as the 2017 NAMEPA Recruitment Program Award recipient.
INVESTING NOW aligns with NAMEPA’s mission to develop a diverse pool of engineers and scientists from K-16. INVESTING NOW, established in 1988, is a pre-college program for students from groups historically underrepresented in STEM majors and careers. The primary goals of the program are to: 1) create a pipeline for well-prepared students to enter college and pursue STEM majors; 2) encourage and support students’ enrollment and achievement in advanced mathematics and science courses; 3) ensure that the participants make informed college choices; 4) support and encourage parents in their role as advocates for their children; and 5) coordinate partnerships between the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering and local and regional schools. Since its founding, 94% or more of the program’s graduates transition to college. In 2016, 100% of the graduates went to college with 54% majoring in STEM fields and in 2017, 97% will attend college with 67% majoring in STEM fields.
The NAMEPA Recruitment Program Award was established to honor recruitment programs that have actively increased the participation of students from historically underrepresented minority (URM) populations in engineering. NAMEPA is a national network of educators and representatives from industry, government, and nonprofit organizations who share a common commitment to improving the recruitment and retention of Black/African American, Latino/Hispanic American, Native American, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander students earning degrees in engineering. NAMEPA promotes the professional development of its members and serves as an advocate for and resource to those programs and organizations that seek to recruit, educate, and employ diverse engineering talent.
NAMEPA is very grateful for University of Pittsburgh’s efforts in advancing the achievement and persistence of students from URM backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The INVESTING NOW program will be recognized at the NAMEPA Awards Celebration Dinner on September 12th, 2017 during the 38th Annual NAMEPA National Conference (Sept 10th -13th, 2017) in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech.
