Dean Gregory Washington Receives NAMEPA President’s Award

The National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA) is pleased to announce the selection of Dean Gregory Washington as the recipient of the 2017 NAMEPA President’s Award. Dean Washington is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Stacey Nicholas Dean of the Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine.

Dean Washington is a living testimony of excellence and commitment to student success.  Throughout his career as an accomplished scholar, distinguished educator, and leading academic administrator, Dean Washington has built a legacy of broadening the participation of underrepresented students in engineering and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. His span of influence reaches far beyond his home institution to university leaders around the country, nonprofit organizations dedicated to engineering diversity, and national efforts in engineering and engineering education. In particular, the President and Executive Director, Virginia Booth Womack, recognizes the invaluable strategic guidance he has provided her translating to NAMEPA’s actions to blaze a new path for engineering diversity efforts nationwide.

The President’s award is selected by the NAMEPA President to honor an individual who has provided strategic insight and support to NAMEPA leadership.

NAMEPA is a national network of educators and representatives from industry, government, and nonprofit organizations who share a common commitment to improving the recruitment and retention of Black/African American, Latino/Hispanic American, Native American, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islander students earning degrees in engineering. NAMEPA promotes the professional development of its members and serves as an advocate for and resource to those programs and organizations that seek to recruit, educate, and employ diverse engineering talent.

NAMEPA is very grateful for Dean Washington’s efforts in advancing the achievement and persistence of students from URM backgrounds in STEM.  Dean Washington will be recognized at the NAMEPA Awards Celebration Dinner on September 12th, 2017 during the 38th Annual NAMEPA National Conference (Sept 10th -13th, 2017) in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech.
